PATIENT INFORMATION
Phenytoin is used to treat seizure disorders. This
drug should not be used by some patients with specific heart
diseases. This medication must be monitored very closely
and therefore you will have blood drawn periodically to
determine how much drug is in your blood. The medication
works best when the level of medication in the blood is
kept constant. When blood levels get too low, a seizure
may result. When blood levels get too high, side effects
occur. Blood levels should normally be between 10 to 20
micrograms per milliliter. It may take several dose adjustment
to find the right dose for you. It is very important then
to take the medication exactly as prescribed. This is also
one medication where changing between brands is not recommended.
Alcoholic beverages should be avoided. This medication has
many side effects and you should discuss all medicines with
your doctor or pharmacist. If you develop a rash call your
doctor or pharmacist immediately. You may be instructed
on the importance of oral hygiene. This drug, with long
term use, can cause gum growth. Other common side effects
include: eye movements, loss of coordination, confusion
and slurred speech. Report any of these side effects to
your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
